It was our first time to visit the island of Samar in Eastern Visayas. We went to the Samar Island National Park (SINP) for a birding trip to see some Visayan and Mindanao endemics.

With a very early start from Manila, we arrived before dawn at Subic Bay. Soon enough, we had our first view of a Chocolate Boobook which was a very nice start for our birding trip in Subic. We had good, long views of the rare White-fronted Tit, our first specialty for the morning.

One morning birding at La Mesa Eco Park a birds heaven in the city of Manila. The best site to see Ashy Thrush as it has at least 5 territories within the park.

We had a five-day customized trip to the Sierra Madre Mountains primarily in search of the Whiskered Pitta at Camp Sawa. We started with a long walk towards Camp One and as soon as we reached the first small forested patch, we got splendid views of Luzon White-browed Shama. Another welcome sighting was that of the rapidly declining Philippine Collared-Dove.

It has been several years since I last went to Negros. I decided to visit this Visayan Island again in preparation for the 2014 remote birding tour. I began my trip in Mt. Kanlaon and in the Mambukal resort where one can find the remnant forest on the slopes of the mountains. Several mixed flocks were encountered in the area holding the very attractive Flame-templed Babbler.

We started our tour with a very early departure from Manila airport with a flight bound for Cebu, where we transferred directly to the Tabunan forest for a one night stay. Soon we were out in the field searching for the critical endangered Black Shama which showed very well. We also recorded Visayan Balicassiao, White-vented Whistler, Mangrove Blue Flycatcher (a sure future split) Crimson Sunbird and Visayan Flowerpecker. At dusk we were ready to search for our main target bird, the recently described Cebu Hawk-Owl.

One week birding around the 3 main areas in the Pasonanca Reserve resulted in seeing many of the specialties recorded in the watershed. A Philippine Megapode was spotted along a trail at the Intake, at least 4 Blue-crowned Raquet-tails were scoped, and a Mindanao Bleeding-Heart was heard calling in Cabonegro.

We recently visited the remote mountains of Southern Palawan in search of the little known and rarely seen Palawan Striped-babbler. The massive Mount Mantalingajan near Brooke’s Point was the starting point for this expedition.
